작고 소박하지만 가슴 뿌듯한 행복감을 마음껏 누려본 때가 있었을까? 혹여 나이만큼 빠른 시간의 속도와 살아 온 날만큼의 무게에 휘둘려 자신의 소중한 감정들보다는 더 크고 더 현실적이며 타인들에게 과시적일수록 좋다는 현대사회의 행복 기준을 머릿속에 마음속에 깊이 새기도록 강요당하지는 않았을까? 긍정이든 부정이든 우리들에게 행복의 크기는 점점 커져만 가고, 참 느낌으로부터는 꽤 멀어져 있는 것만은 분명하다.
요즘 핫 트렌드인 “소확행”이란 단어를 유행시킨 작가 무라카미 하루키는 그의 수필 <랑겔한스 섬의 오후>에서 소확행(小確幸, 작지만 확실한 행복)을 이렇게 표현했다.
“막 구운 따끈한 빵을 손으로 뜯어 먹는 것, 오후의 햇빛이 나뭇잎 그림자를 그리는 걸 바라보며 브람스의 실내악을 듣는 것, 서랍 안에 정갈하게 접어 넣은 속옷이 가득 쌓여 있는 것, 새로 산 정결한 면 냄새가 풍기는 하얀 셔츠를 머리에서부터 뒤집어 쓸 때의 기분....”
문구 하나하나에 일본문화의 정서가 깊이 배인 담백한 표현이구나 싶다. 눈 감고 가만히 그 상황을 연상하노라면 소박한 웃음이 입가에 내리며 많은 공감이 일어난다. 그런데 문득, 우리 한국 사람들의 정서에 맞는 표현들은 무엇일까? 우리들의 공감을 불러일으킬 감각의 언어들은 무엇일까? 반문하니 쉬이 떠오르지 않는다. 우리사회가 아직은 “삶을 즐긴다”는 표현에 대한 낯 섬이 너무 강해서 그 느낌에 대한 단어조차 만들지 못한 것은 아닐까? 그러면 나의 하루 중 소확행은 무엇일까 하고 손가락 집으며 헤아려보니 출근하자마자 내려 마시는 커피한잔과 점심식사 후 가벼운 산책, 퇴근길 차안에서 듣는 음악 정도다. 아마도 많은 분들이 비슷한 경험에 고개를 끄덕이겠지만 반백수가 되도록 별것 없어 그런지 고백하기 민망하다.
금번 전시 주제인 <소확행-여행>에서는 ‘여행’이란 것이 뭔가 해외여행이나 문화유적 답사 등 단단히 계획된 일이 아니라 출퇴근길, 장보러 시장가는 길, 친구 만나러 가는 길, 학교 가는 길들에서 발견할 수 있는 소소한 일들에서 여행의 즐거움을 찾아보자 제안한다. 김중수, 오재철, 정미정 작가들 또한 길 위에서 만난 작은 것들 속에서 많은 “소확행”들을 발견했고 그 작은 행복들을 우리에게 전해주고 있다.
>> 작가소개
김중수 작가는 자신이 태어나고 자란 군산의 모습을 있는 그대로 그려냄으로써 삶의 진정성(眞情性)을 기록하는 작업을 한다. 작가가 택한 여행지는 군산의 버스 안이다. 그 버스 안에는 군산의 사람들과 문화와 역사, 삶의 진솔한 이야기들이 듬뿍 담겨져 있고 작가는 그 안에서 몸으로 감지하며 마음으로 공감하는 수다한 이야기들을 사람들의 표정을 통해 드러내고 있다.
버스 안의 수많은 사람들의 표정과 몸짓을 읽어보며 타인의 삶을 관찰하는 낯선 여행가 같은 작가 그리고 여행 그림일기. 우리는 이 여행그림에서 무엇을 함께 보고 같이 느끼게 될까?
정미정 작가는 자신의 과거로부터 현재까지의 삶 자체를 여행지로 정하고 길고 긴 여행을 하고 있다. 자신의 분신과도 같은 자동차는 뜨겁고 메마른 사막을 지나기도 하고, 푸르른 오아시스에서 잠시 휴식을 취하기도 하고, 물 속에 반쯤 잠기어 유영을 하기도 한다. 때론 밤하늘에 펼쳐진 길고 긴 은하수 길을 따라 환하게 불을 밝히고 밤 길을 떠나기도 한다. 자신을 찾아 떠나는 여행은 언제나 고독하고 외롭고 힘들기도 하지만, 여행지에서 만나게 되는 우연적인 모든 경험들이 자신의 모습을 되돌아보게 하는 즐거운 여행길을 만드는 것은 아닐까?
오재철 작가는 게임과 스릴을 즐기기는 하지만 슬픈 영화나 무서운 영화를 보면 일주일간 우울함에서 벗어나지 못하는 오버 감성의 소유자로 평생 어른이 되고 싶어 하지 않는 그러나 어느새 불혹을 훌쩍 넘겨버린 철없는 어른아이로 자신을 설명한다. 작가의 평생 지우지기이자 글쟁이인 아내와 함께 전 세계를 여행하며 경험한 모든 것들을 사진과 글로 남기는 작업을 진행하고 있다. 그들이 함께 엮어낸 책 <우리 다시 어딘가에서>에 수록된 사진에는 여행자의 호기심이 가득한 시선과 즐거운 경험들, 그리고 사랑이 가득 담겨 있다. 이번 전시에는 그 중 몇 작품이 전시되어 있어, 그들의 여행길을 따라가 볼 수 있다.

Was there a time when we had fully enjoyed humble and proud feeling of joy? Have the speed of time and the weight of life exerted us to deeply engrave more of the modern standard of happiness that implies the bigger, more realistic and flaunting to others are better than one's valuable feelings? Whether positive or negative, it is evident that the size of happiness is growing bigger and bigger yet has become quite far from the true feeling.
A writer Haruki Murakami described a recent popular term, "small but certain happiness" taken from his essayas following:
"Eating fresh baked bread, listening to Brahms chamber music while staring at the afternoon sunlight picturing a shadow of the leaves, neatly folded underwear piling up in the drawer, the feeling of putting on a newly bought white cotton shirt from the top of my head..."
The simplicity of such expression deeply absorbs the sentiments of Japanese culture. In a quiet reminiscent of the situation, it lets modest smile arise with much empathy. But then how about the expressions reflecting the sentiments of Korean? What are the words of sense enough to arouse our empathy? The answer does not come up easily. Is it because our society holds the unfamiliarity with an expression of "enjoying life" too heavily that it eventually has become incapable of creating a right word for it? Then, thinking of my day, my type of "small but certain happiness" would be drinking a cup of coffee when I get to work, taking a light walk after lunch, and listening to music in the car on my way home. Many of us would share the similar experiences.
Nowadays, people start to have one or two small hobbies like restaurant tour, travel review or collecting unique things as "small but certain happiness" has grown to a global trend. Taking a step back or a break is expressed as Au calme (France), Lagom (Sweden), and Hygge (Denmark). In the Orient, lunch may signify the equivalent to the message. The achievement of placing a serene comma in our minds and between daily routines would embrace a search for light, bright and warm things. Happiness is not the object but the source of the sense and it is also not about the size but the frequency. The glow of happiness will be waiting in our daily surroundings.
The theme of this exhibition suggests that instead of defining 'travel' as firmly planned things like traveling abroad or exploring cultural heritage, the pleasure of travel can be found in the triviality such as on our way to work, market, school or meet a friend. The invited artists Kim Jung Su, Oh Jae Chul, and Jung Mi Jung have also discovered much "small but certain happiness" in the little things they have encountered on the road and are conveying them to us.
>> Artist Introduction
Artist Kim Jung Su works on documenting the authenticity of life by drawing plain image of his hometown Gunsan. And the scene inside the bus is the chosen travel destination. The bus fully speaks of people, culture, and history of the city with the truthful stories of life and the artist reveals them through people's facial expressions after perceiving and sympathizing with them. As an unknown traveler who reads their faces and gestures, the artist is observing the lives of others and depicting a travel picture diary. What will we see and feel in them?
Artist Jung Mi Jung has begun her long journey as she determined the past to present life itself as a travel destination. Her car, the other self would pass through the hot and barren desert, rest in the azure oasis, and swim in the water. Sometimes it would make a night journey and light up a long galaxy in the sky. It is always lonely and tough to have a journey for exploring oneself. Yet all the accidental experiences encountered in the trips may create a pleasant journey that will let you look back on yourself.
Artist Oh Jae Chul describes himself as an oversensitive man who enjoys games and thrills but cannot escape from the depression for a week after watching a sad or scary movie and also an injudicious adult child who does not want to be an adult for a lifetime, yet who quickly turned the age of forty. He is working on documenting photos and writings of everything he experienced while traveling around the world with his wife. The photographs in their bookare full of a traveler's curious gaze, joyful experience and love. Several works of them are displayed at this exhibition, so you can follow their travel routes.
