About Exhibition

The invited "Atomouse" artist Lee Dong Gi and "Straw" artist Hong Sang Sik, both modified as Korean Pop Art, are experimenting with a unique formative language by fusing the images of multi-layers to establish their originality. The image fixed in genre personality not only represents a result of drawing feelings, but also directly relates to the attitude of an artist in the realization of a specific image. A depth of struggle and thinking towards a process of approaching and revealing determines the image and acquires the differentiation from the universality in the context of contemporary art.

In the early 90's, Lee Dong Gi made his own character called 'Atomouse.' It is a composite image of Japanese Atom and American Mickey Mouse, derived from a collision of cultural contexts of East and West that exposes his sincere thinking about art. Atomouse has acted as an icon during the times of revealing unstable aspects of Korean society and extended various questions about Korean pop art or the boundaries of art. He does not confine his work to a fixed viewpoint that one image might present such as advertisement image, TV drama or classic painting. He rather pursues a method of expanding it to the independently reproduced painting-image away from the originality and the representation.

At present, he pursues a coexisted painting space of "Atomouse" and "abstraction." Furthermore, it is a work of distorting traditional aesthetic viewpoint of 'ideologic image' and 'pop art' and questioning the difference between pop art in general view and the notion of 'abstraction' or 'abstract-image.' The method seeks to revisit the abstraction of painting and move away from the attempt to examine the spirit of pop art or establish its status. In what form can a painting exist other than an image is an incisive yet pleasant question thrown into the Korean painters.

Hong Sang Sik was inspired by his childhood play of pushing a bunch of noodles by hand to shape the low relief. He took these 'noodles' as sculptural material to his work, greatly expanding the parts of a body such as lips, words spoken, torso, etc. Since then, his exploration of a sculptural method that originated from the noodles has gone through the material experiment with wire and bamboo and mass-produced straw of modern times was chosen as a material of his sculpture.

Its own material characteristic of a long cylinder shape that contains a hollow structure generates another hidden image. The translucent material is felt to be heavy or light according to the intensity of the light and the shape it creates is intersected with clarity and uncertainty. The work of revealing a clear shape by the transmitted light is also difficult to detect the volume and the mass of the sculpture. He enlarges and presents the parts of a body such as hands, chests, eyes, lips as well as a portrait of a certain person and modern products such as high heels and Coca-Cola bottles, yet due to the physical properties of the plastic straws and the characteristics of the light, it is not seen as a solid image.
His work remains in an empty form after a slippery and decolorized piece and meaning have escaped through the hole. Such high or low relief work is revealed as a dual image and changes like a magic eye according to the eyes of the audience and how they wish to read.
