The annual exhibitionfocuses on the works of Daejeon-based artists who constantly develop unique formative art world and produce main discourse of contemporary art. The fifth exhibition of the year aims to establish the theme asand pays close attention to the intersection between rhythm of painting and rhythm of life alongside their interrelationship from the works of artists Lee Min Hyuk and Park Neung Saeng.

For this exhibition, we invited artists who view the fundamental senses and desires of human being from the closest gaze and perspective and compose a picture full of movement fused with experience. Lee Min Hyuk and Park Neung Saeng received education at art college in the period of the rapid change of Korean contemporary art in 1990's. In this period, they embodied the uniqueness of art by exploring the boundaries of the following art method and condition that would secure a stable future as a promising artist: diversification of expressive media and production techniques, collision of traditional and new forms, break out of academism, destruction of expressive forms and contents to build new aesthetic discourse and preservation of traditional form. They were young artists who formed the art college student union and pursued the new creative activities and the originality, shifting from the formality of academism.

They both started to receive attention from the art world since the mid-2000s. Lee Min Hyuk expressed the energy and the flow of the people at the crowded plaza with quick brush touch and intense color, filling a canvas full of speed and tension alongside revealing the inner city space filled with deep loneliness and desolateness. In his recent works, the aspects of human life at a market/residential alley and urban space and the lively appearance of dancers enjoying light and heavy tango rhythm alongside the dense inner world are captured. Park Neung Saeng had explored new brush stroke of ink after traditional water ink landscape painting. Then he explored the unfamiliar cityscapes that comprise everyday life and wish on the canvas by elaborate brush strokes and bold water ink painting technique. It is seen from the perspective of a wanderer, exploring leisurely hiking and the city, with the method of overlapping the past and the present scenery that offers the signification of a place combined with unique experiences.

The work of Lee Min Hyuk features a daily scenery and experience, particularly our nearest alley. The alley is a boundary, a yard of harmony and a passage of the age. The expressions of our lives and tangled rhythms of life are revealed with a big resonance, as his work is full of swaying spaces, intense color, fast pace, and scenery of dynamic dances to the rhythm of tango. The place of a candid exchange of the ordinary stories is a pub, where the cheers of consolation relieve worries and deliver courage for a while. A road that surrounds the pub becomes a yard; it is a tango stage of dancing tanguero and tanguera as well as a milonga of revealing a life.

His latest workseries particularly carry all senses of the artist's own tango experience as tango is the important course of training on capturing the experiences, the world of senses and the rhythm of life. It is about comprehending the close sympathy between men and the lively feeling of the moment and expressing them into a picture. Such expression is the important factor of stimulating the senses of a painter and a viewer and sincerely evoking the inner mind.

The work of Park Neung Saeng possesses the incorporation of an actual scenery and physical experiences in painting, which is a feature of the Real Landscape Painting or Jingyungsansuhwa. Its new style is a starting point of the artist and unique Korean style that was originated by Jung Sun and developed and maintained by the mid-18th Chosun painters including Danwon Kim Hong Do and is integrated with the merits of Silkyungsansuh and Sakyungsansuh. He attempted to gain the clue of new direction for the modern Water Ink Landscape from the spiritual and expressive style of the traditional painting. So, after directly exploring an object space for the work such as nature or city, he aims to create new natural or urban space that is resulted from the earned experience and characteristics of the place.

The artist's landscape has been transformed from the traditional Water Ink Landscape to the urban landscape with an extraordinary brush stroke of ink. He experimented with Pamuk(a technique that draws to a certain level then paints it over with thicker or thinner ink before drying to show the difference of shading and gradation) and Balmuk(a technique that shows the spreading of ink) and later experimented with the use of galpil(technique using dry brush with as little ink as possible) or a branch alongside the sprinkling or shedding technique. Also, he used raw colors like intense red or green instead of traditional coloring and utilized a rough canvas as an experimental material rather than a Chinese drawing paper.

In his latest work the City Landscape, the places he explored and documented- Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, New York, Nanji, Gyeryongsan, Bukhansan, and Inwangsan are portrayed within the free spatial expression and the panoramic landscape combined with intense red and blue surfaces rather than the geometric perspective. In addition, andseries emphasize the awe of nature and the new place characteristics by expressing a figure that descends vertically with bungee jumping in the wide landscape background.

The 'rhythm of life' that emanates from the works of both artists is neither grand nor fancy. They are the 'stirring melody of life' that instantly soars based on the honest experience from closely exploring and slowly examining the aspects of our everyday life. The works depict the authentic rhythm of life that has gone through the reflection of deep empathy towards the patterns and traces drawn on the path of human life.
